Bilateral Trade Mirror Gap

Compare explicit bilateral mirror trade values with a symmetric relative-gap convention without adjusting valuation or reporting periods.

Description

Compare reported exports with a partner's mirror import value.

International economic quantities depend on currency quotation, valuation base, denominator, accounting boundary and reporting period. A unit value differs from a comparable price, while import penetration can exceed one under a supplied absorption definition. Tax, ownership and counterfactual terms remain explicit scenarios rather than verified economic facts.

Compare reported exports with a partner's mirror import value.

When to use this tool

Use Bilateral Trade Mirror Gap when you already have reportedExports, partnerReportedImports and need to compare reported exports with a partner's mirror import value.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter reportedExports, partnerReportedImports. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read importMinusExportGap, symmetricRelativeGap, defined. Inspect defined before interpreting the associated values.

Require both values>=0; return imports-exports and 2*(imports-exports)/(exports+imports), or zero with defined=false when both are zero.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
reportedExportsReported ExportsRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
partnerReportedImportsPartner Reported ImportsRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
importMinusExportGapImport Minus Export GapRequired. Finite number.
symmetricRelativeGap2*(imports-exports)/(imports+exports), using direct floating-point operations; extreme sum overflow may produce a misleading zero.Required. Finite number.
definedFalse only when the supplied sum is zero; this flag does not detect intermediate overflow.Required. Boolean.

Limitations and assumptions

  • This signed symmetric fraction is not an absolute percentage gap. Extreme values can overflow the direct denominator; use a common rescaled unit for reliable arithmetic. Coverage, timing and valuation differences are not reconciled.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the complete underlying accounts, price indices, trade definitions and applicable source rules for an actual comparison. Reconcile valuation, timing, currency and coverage before interpreting a residual or weighted contribution as a broader economic result.
