Enclosure Gasket Compression Percentage Term Tool

Retain negative compression when an explicit installed thickness exceeds the free thickness.

Loading tool…

Description

Subtract installedThickness from positive freeThickness and divide by freeThickness for compressionFraction; multiply by 100 for compressionPercent.

A simple strain, compression, or neutral-axis formula models only part of a material's behavior. Geometry, loading, elasticity, and fatigue assumptions govern how the result can be used.

Subtract installedThickness from positive freeThickness and divide by freeThickness for compressionFraction; multiply by 100 for compressionPercent.

When to use this tool

Use Enclosure Gasket Compression Percentage Term when you need one explicit deformation-model component.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter freeThickness, installedThickness. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read compressionFraction, compressionPercent. Use the output convention below.

installedThicknessInstalled ThicknessRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
compressionFractionFractional thickness reduction; negative for expansion.Required. Finite number.
compressionPercentThickness reduction multiplied by 100 for percent.Required. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • An installed thickness larger than free thickness gives negative compression; sealing, material recovery, and safe compression limits are not assessed.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use validated material data and an appropriate mechanical analysis and test for safe design decisions.
