Otolith Radius Fish Length Back Calc Term Tool

One Fraser-Lee linear body-length/otolith-radius back-calculation with an explicitly supplied intercept.

Description

Return interceptLength + (captureLength-interceptLength) × earlierRadius/captureRadius.

Age and growth records compare reader estimates, increments, lengths, and observation intervals. A numeric difference or back-calculation depends on the chosen origin and model rather than establishing the animal's true age.

Return interceptLength + (captureLength-interceptLength) × earlierRadius/captureRadius.

When to use this tool

Use Otolith Radius Fish Length Back Calc Term when you need one supplied age or growth-record component.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter captureLength, captureRadius, earlierRadius, interceptLength. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read earlierLength. Use the output convention below.

Require positive captureRadius, earlierRadius within it, and captureLength at least nonnegative interceptLength. Return interceptLength + (captureLength-interceptLength) × earlierRadius/captureRadius.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Lengths and radii each need consistent units. This is a caller-specified linear back-calculation model, not validation of otolith growth, intercept choice, or actual earlier fish length.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review aging validation, measurement landmarks, sampling, and the species-specific growth assumptions separately.
