Description
Divide lineVolume and lineVolume-deadVolume by positive throughFlow, validating lineVolume at least nonnegative deadVolume.
Flow calculations relate volume, time, cross-section, velocity, and supplied model parameters. A local ratio or contribution does not by itself solve a complete hydraulic system.
Divide lineVolume and lineVolume-deadVolume by positive throughFlow, validating lineVolume at least nonnegative deadVolume.
When to use this tool
Use Hydroponic Line Residence Time Factor when you need one explicit flow component with coherent units and references.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter lineVolume, throughFlow, deadVolume. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read nominalTime, activeVolumeTime. Use the output convention below.

| throughFlow | Through Flow | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| deadVolume | Dead Volume | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| nominalTime | Nominal Time | Required. Finite number. |
| activeVolumeTime | Active Volume Time | Required. Finite number. |

"output": {
"nominalTime": 4,
"activeVolumeTime": 3.6

} Limitations and assumptions
- Volume and flow must use compatible units so output is time; these nominal ratios do not establish the actual residence-time distribution or mixing quality.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use surveyed geometry, appropriate calibration, and a complete hydraulic model for operational or design decisions.
