Precipitation Phase Explicit Threshold Gap Tool

Apply supplied temperature thresholds as descriptive bins; no precipitation-phase diagnosis or physical transition model is inferred.

Description

Return temperature minus each threshold, classify equality at the cold limit as snow-side and equality at the warm limit as rain-side, otherwise transition.

Degree-time indices accumulate temperature differences above or below a supplied threshold. Multiplying by a model coefficient creates a conditional estimate whose units depend on the time basis and coefficient.

Return temperature minus each threshold, classify equality at the cold limit as snow-side and equality at the warm limit as rain-side, otherwise transition.

When to use this tool

Use Precipitation Phase Explicit Threshold Gap when you need one explicit temperature-index or threshold component.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter temperature, snowThreshold, rainThreshold. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read coldMargin, warmMargin, category. Use the output convention below.

Require rainThreshold above snowThreshold. Return temperature minus each threshold, classify equality at the cold limit as snow-side and equality at the warm limit as rain-side, otherwise transition.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Temperatures share one scale; labels only apply supplied thresholds and do not predict actual precipitation phase, icing, or road safety.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check the threshold, coefficient calibration, and complete energy or environmental model separately.
