Rating Curve Datum Shift Exponent Tool

Calculate rating curve datum shift exponent from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Return coefficient × (stage-zeroFlowStage)^exponent and its derivative with respect to stage.

Flow calculations relate volume, time, cross-section, velocity, and supplied model parameters. A local ratio or contribution does not by itself solve a complete hydraulic system.

Return coefficient × (stage-zeroFlowStage)^exponent and its derivative with respect to stage.

When to use this tool

Use Rating Curve Datum Shift Exponent when you need one explicit flow component with coherent units and references.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter stage, zeroFlowStage, coefficient, exponent. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read flow, stageSensitivity. Use the output convention below.

Require stage above zeroFlowStage, nonnegative coefficient, and positive exponent. Return coefficient × (stage-zeroFlowStage)^exponent and its derivative with respect to stage.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Stage quantities share a datum and length unit; coefficient supplies the discharge unit. This evaluates a supplied power rating without fitting, hysteresis, submergence correction, or extrapolation approval.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use surveyed geometry, appropriate calibration, and a complete hydraulic model for operational or design decisions.
