Description

Compute circular opening area, depth times area divided by 1000 for idealCatchMl, then apply efficiency.

Precipitation and evaporation records distinguish water depth, catchment area, volume, and observation duration. Converting among them requires coherent units and a clear measured or modeled basis.

Compute circular opening area, depth times area divided by 1000 for idealCatchMl, then apply efficiency.

When to use this tool

Use Rainfall Depth Gauge Catch Volume when you need one explicit water-depth, volume, or accumulation component.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter depthMm, orificeDiameterMm, catchEfficiency. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read orificeAreaMm2, idealCatchMl, expectedCatchMl. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative depthMm, positive orificeDiameterMm, and catchEfficiency in (0, 1]. Compute circular opening area, depth times area divided by 1000 for idealCatchMl, then apply efficiency.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The diameter is not a radius and 1000 cubic millimeters equal one milliliter; this ideal catch term does not estimate wind or wetting losses.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check instrument records, unit conversions, temporal coverage, and a complete hydrologic model before interpreting runoff or water availability.
