Urban Rural Gradient Distance Band Tool

Half-open distance band relative to a caller-defined gradient origin, without an urban/rural classification.

Description

Floor (distance-origin)/bandWidth for band and return its lower and upper boundaries.

Spatial models compare distances, travel intervals, activity areas, or supplied interaction functions. Coordinates and model parameters must share a compatible basis, and a local term does not establish observed behavior.

Floor (distance-origin)/bandWidth for band and return its lower and upper boundaries.

When to use this tool

Use Urban Rural Gradient Distance Band when you need one explicit spatial or travel-model component.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter distance, origin, bandWidth. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read band, lowerDistance, upperDistance. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative distance and origin and positive bandWidth. Floor (distance-origin)/bandWidth for band and return its lower and upper boundaries.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Bands are lower-inclusive and upper-exclusive on the numeric coordinate; distance below origin yields a negative band, without inferring an actual urban-rural category.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check projection, route definitions, calibration, and the complete model before interpreting access or predicted flows.
