Ebb Flow Bench Cycle Volume
Balance ebb/flow flooded free volume, solid displacement, additional media absorption and plumbing with caller drain recovery; solid displacement excludes open pores already represented in absorption.
Description
An ebb-and-flow cycle fills free bench volume, media absorption and plumbing.
An ebb-and-flow cycle fills free bench volume, media absorption and plumbing. Drain recovery applies to recoverable free water rather than media uptake already retained.1
Balance ebb/flow flooded free volume, solid displacement, additional media absorption and plumbing with caller drain recovery; solid displacement excludes open pores already represented in absorption.
When to use Ebb Flow Bench Cycle Volume
Use this tool to balance ebb/flow flooded free volume, solid displacement, additional media absorption and plumbing with caller drain recovery; solid displacement excludes open pores already represented in absorption.
Prepare the plant, nutrient, light or scheduling measurements for the intended crop and period. Keep paired records aligned and confirm units and supplied target values.
How to use Ebb Flow Bench Cycle Volume and understand its results
- Prepare the plant, nutrient, light or scheduling measurements for the intended crop and period. Keep paired records aligned and confirm units and supplied target values.
- Enter benchAreaM2, floodDepthCm, submergedSolidDisplacementLiters, mediaAbsorptionLiters, plumbingHoldUpLiters, drainRecoveryFraction using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read floodCycleDeliveredLiters, recoverableDrainLiters, netMakeupLitersPerCycle. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| benchAreaM2 | Bench area m2 | number | Required |
| floodDepthCm | Flood depth cm | number | Required |
| submergedSolidDisplacementLiters | Submerged solid displacement liters | number | Required |
| mediaAbsorptionLiters | Media absorption liters | number | Required |
| plumbingHoldUpLiters | Plumbing hold up liters | number | Required |
| drainRecoveryFraction | Drain recovery fraction | number | Required |
Use positive bench area, nonnegative depth/displacement/absorption/plumbing and recovery fraction in [0,1]. Require displacement no greater than geometric flood volume. Return delivered, recoverable drain and net makeup liters.
free liters=bench m² × flood cm × 10−solid displacement; makeup=delivered−recovery fraction(free+plumbing) Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| floodCycleDeliveredLiters | Flood cycle delivered liters | number |
| recoverableDrainLiters | Recoverable drain liters | number |
| netMakeupLitersPerCycle | Net makeup liters per cycle | number |

Solid displacement excludes open pores represented by absorption. Unmeasured leakage and drainage kinetics are omitted.
Numeric inputs and returned numeric values must be finite; an unrepresentable returned value produces an error. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Substrate Bulk Density Porosity: Derive substrate pore water/air partition from measured saturated and drained core masses; distinct from geology porosity inferred from assumed particle density, requiring full wetting and no core swelling. For a complementary task, use Peat Perlite Bark Blend Ratio Mixer: Scale caller peat/perlite/bark loose-volume ratios to a calibrated settled blend volume and balance dry/water masses; no additive pore-volume, pH or fertility guarantee.
