Section Obliquity Apparent Thickness Factor Tool

Ideal planar section apparent thickness with angle measured from the normal viewing direction.

Loading tool…

Description

Divide thickness by cosine(angle) and return the reciprocal-cosine factor.

Histology images and sections have pixel scales, physical dimensions, cutting indexes, and processing changes. Geometric arithmetic depends on those conventions and does not identify tissue or establish diagnostic adequacy.

Divide thickness by cosine(angle) and return the reciprocal-cosine factor.

When to use this tool

Use Section Obliquity Apparent Thickness Factor when you need one explicit histology image-scale or section-geometry component.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter trueThickness, angleRadians. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read apparentThickness, factor. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative trueThickness and angleRadians strictly between -π/2 and π/2. Divide thickness by cosine(angle) and return the reciprocal-cosine factor.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Angle is deviation from perpendicular traversal through parallel faces, in radians; the planar model does not correct tissue deformation or infer section orientation from images.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Verify calibration, section preparation, image registration, and the complete sampling protocol before interpreting tissue measurements.
