Description
Calculate nominal section depth from a zero-based section index and pitch.
Histology records connect specimen/cassette/slide identity, section position, image calibration, stain references and evaluable area. Linear and area scales differ, and section pitch is not automatically thickness. Supplied measurements and labels do not inspect tissue, validate preparation or establish a diagnosis.
Calculate nominal section depth from a zero-based section index and pitch.
When to use this tool
Use Histology Section Depth Offset when you already have firstSectionDepthMicrometers, sectionIndex, sectionPitchMicrometers and need to calculate nominal section depth from a zero-based section index and pitch.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter firstSectionDepthMicrometers, sectionIndex, sectionPitchMicrometers. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read sectionDepthMicrometers. Use the output convention below.
Require nonnegative first depth/pitch in µm and safe whole sectionIndex>=0; depth=first+index*pitch.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| firstSectionDepthMicrometers | First Section Depth Micrometers | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| sectionIndex | Zero-based nonnegative whole index; depth=firstSectionDepthMicrometers+index*sectionPitchMicrometers. | Required. Safe integer; minimum 0. |
| sectionPitchMicrometers | Positive distance between section depths; not automatically the physical section thickness. | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| sectionDepthMicrometers | Section Depth Micrometers | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Pitch is the supplied section-to-section increment, not automatically thickness. No lost sections, actual cutting depth or tissue position is inferred.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Reconcile original specimen and processing records with calibrated images and the complete analytical method. Keep evaluable-area, control and section-depth definitions explicit; local ratios, identifier splits and nominal scales do not validate anatomical or diagnostic conclusions.
