Herpetofauna Road Survey Effort Distance Tool

Sum explicitly supplied road-survey leg distances and count legs without deducing detection effort from route geometry.

Description

Total supplied road-survey leg distances and count the legs.

Reptile and amphibian records distinguish specimen identity, anatomical measurement, observation effort, date uncertainty and location protection. Unobserved status differs from recorded absence, while a call-overlap label uses supplied intervals. These local records and geometric terms do not identify a species, infer health or establish adequate field practice.

Total supplied road-survey leg distances and count the legs.

When to use this tool

Use Herpetofauna Road Survey Effort Distance when you already have surveyLegDistances and need to total supplied road-survey leg distances and count the legs.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter surveyLegDistances. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read totalSurveyDistance, legCount. Use the output convention below.

Require every leg distance>=0; sum as numbers and report array length.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
surveyLegDistancesSurvey Leg DistancesRequired. Array of finite number; maximum items 256.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
totalSurveyDistanceTotal Survey DistanceRequired. Finite number.
legCountCounts supplied entries, including zero lengths; overlap and duplicated travel are not detected.Required. Safe integer.

Limitations and assumptions

  • An empty list totals zero; no route, repeated coverage, actual effort, animals or survey suitability is verified.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review original observations, specimens, calibrated images and survey logs for substantive interpretation. Use the appropriate complete biological or survey method, and protect underlying location data; local labels and display replacements do not perform those tasks.
