Description
Classify overlap, touching or separation of two supplied call intervals.
Reptile and amphibian records distinguish specimen identity, anatomical measurement, observation effort, date uncertainty and location protection. Unobserved status differs from recorded absence, while a call-overlap label uses supplied intervals. These local records and geometric terms do not identify a species, infer health or establish adequate field practice.
Classify overlap, touching or separation of two supplied call intervals.
When to use this tool
Use Acoustic Survey Frog Call Overlap Label when you already have firstStart, firstEnd, secondStart, secondEnd and need to classify overlap, touching or separation of two supplied call intervals.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter firstStart, firstEnd, secondStart, secondEnd. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read overlapDuration, relation. Use the output convention below.
Require each end>=start; raw=min(ends)-max(starts), duration=max(0,raw) and relation is overlap/touch/disjoint according to raw's sign.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| firstStart | First Start | Required. Finite number. |
| firstEnd | First End | Required. Finite number. |
| secondStart | Second Start | Required. Finite number. |
| secondEnd | Second End | Required. Finite number. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| overlapDuration | Overlap Duration | Required. Finite number. |
| relation | The raw interval-overlap sign selects overlap, touch or separate; a contained zero-width interval is labeled touch. | Required. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Zero-length intervals can produce the touch label even without positive-duration audio overlap; no calls, species or actual recordings are analyzed.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Review original observations, specimens, calibrated images and survey logs for substantive interpretation. Use the appropriate complete biological or survey method, and protect underlying location data; local labels and display replacements do not perform those tasks.
