FHIR Quantity Comparator Censor Bound Tool

Interpret one of the four ordered FHIR Quantity comparators as a one-sided numeric bound. Return the bound, side and inclusivity; approximate values and absent comparators are outside this operation.

Description

Accept comparator less-than, less-than-or-equal, greater-than, or greater-than-or-equal.

A reported threshold is not an exact measured value. Censored observations have one available bound, while a rounded exact value can be represented by a finite interval.

Accept comparator less-than, less-than-or-equal, greater-than, or greater-than-or-equal.

When to use this tool

Use FHIR Quantity Comparator Censor Bound when you need to preserve bound availability rather than treating every number as exact.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter value, comparator. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read lowerBoundPresent, upperBoundPresent, inclusive, bound. Inspect lowerBoundPresent, upperBoundPresent, inclusive before interpreting the associated values.

Accept comparator less-than, less-than-or-equal, greater-than, or greater-than-or-equal. Return value as bound, its lower/upper orientation, and whether equality is included.1

FHIR Quantity comparators change how its numeric value is interpreted. A bound must retain its inequality and equality convention rather than being treated as an exact point value.2

Limitations and assumptions

  • The bound is not an exact measured value and no opposite bound is inferred; quantities, units, assay limits, and clinical meaning remain outside this check.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Retain the original assay qualifier and use an appropriate censored-data method for statistical analysis.
