Description
Use π/4 times diameter squared for a circular dot or diameter squared otherwise, divide by pitch squared for nominalCoverage, and flag coverage above one.
Print planning connects digital dimensions with physical sheets, ink coverage, folds, and binding. A numerical estimate becomes meaningful only after fixing physical units, material assumptions, and which areas or surfaces are counted.
Use π/4 times diameter squared for a circular dot or diameter squared otherwise, divide by pitch squared for nominalCoverage, and flag coverage above one.
When to use this tool
Use Halftone Dot Area Tone Factor when you need a print-production estimate from explicitly supplied dimensions and material factors.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter dotDiameter, cellPitch, circular. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read dotArea, nominalCoverage, exceedsCellArea. Inspect exceedsCellArea before interpreting the associated values.
Require nonnegative dotDiameter and positive cellPitch. Use π/4 times diameter squared for a circular dot or diameter squared otherwise, divide by pitch squared for nominalCoverage, and flag coverage above one.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| dotDiameter | Circle diameter when circular; square side length otherwise. | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| cellPitch | Cell Pitch | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| circular | Circular | Required. Boolean. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| dotArea | Dot Area | Required. Finite number. |
| nominalCoverage | Dot area divided by cell area; may exceed one as a diagnostic. | Required. Finite number. |
| exceedsCellArea | Exceeds Cell Area | Required. Boolean. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- The noncircular branch is a square whose side uses the field named dotDiameter; overlap, dot growth, screen angle, real halftone shape, and press behavior are not simulated.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Confirm stock, binding, finishing, and output-resolution assumptions with the production specification. Use an imposed proof or physical sample when fold behavior, tolerances, or actual appearance matter.
