Description
In overprint mode add both coverage amounts and report overlap as doubleInkCoverage; otherwise subtract overlap and report zero double ink.
Print planning connects digital dimensions with physical sheets, ink coverage, folds, and binding. A numerical estimate becomes meaningful only after fixing physical units, material assumptions, and which areas or surfaces are counted.
In overprint mode add both coverage amounts and report overlap as doubleInkCoverage; otherwise subtract overlap and report zero double ink.
When to use this tool
Use Ink Channel Overprint Base Flag when you need a print-production estimate from explicitly supplied dimensions and material factors.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter firstCoverage, secondCoverage, overlap, overprint. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read combinedCoverage, doubleInkCoverage. Use the output convention below.
Require both coverages in [0, 1] and overlap within the valid intersection bounds. In overprint mode add both coverage amounts and report overlap as doubleInkCoverage; otherwise subtract overlap and report zero double ink.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| firstCoverage | First Coverage | Required. Finite number; minimum 0; maximum 1. |
| secondCoverage | Second Coverage | Required. Finite number; minimum 0; maximum 1. |
| overlap | Intersection area fraction on the same base as both coverage fractions. | Required. Finite number. |
| overprint | Overprint | Required. Boolean. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| combinedCoverage | Sum under overprint, or union coverage without overprint; overprint can exceed one. | Required. Finite number. |
| doubleInkCoverage | Double Ink Coverage | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Overprint combinedCoverage is a sum of layer amounts and can exceed one, while the other branch is a union share; this is not a physical ink, color-separation, trapping, or press simulation.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Confirm stock, binding, finishing, and output-resolution assumptions with the production specification. Use an imposed proof or physical sample when fold behavior, tolerances, or actual appearance matter.
