Description
Return issued-consumed-returned-retained as gap.
Laboratory balances track material amounts, container counts, and storage positions. A balance model requires compatible units and a clear accounting boundary; arithmetic agreement is not evidence that the physical inventory or study record is complete.
Return issued-consumed-returned-retained as gap.
When to use this tool
Use Test Item Balance Mass Gap when you need a laboratory amount, inventory, or storage-budget calculation.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter issued, consumed, returned, retained. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read gap. Use the output convention below.
Require nonnegative issued, consumed, returned, and retained quantities. Return issued-consumed-returned-retained as gap.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| issued | Issued | Required. Finite number. |
| consumed | Consumed | Required. Finite number. |
| returned | Returned | Required. Finite number. |
| retained | Retained | Required. Finite number. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| gap | Difference on the stated unit and subtraction basis. | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Quantities share one mass or amount basis and dispositions must be disjoint; a signed residual does not identify material loss, measurement error, or GLP compliance.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Reconcile the actual inventory and study records using the laboratory's controlled method. Physical inspection and traceable measurements may be needed when record arithmetic leaves uncertainty.
