Description
Return elapsed as durationLower, elapsed as durationUpper when completed or supplied completionLimit otherwise, and upperKnown only when completed.
A timed observation can end before the underlying task or event finishes. A recorded limit then describes the observation process; it does not necessarily provide the actual completion time or a known upper bound.
Return elapsed as durationLower, elapsed as durationUpper when completed or supplied completionLimit otherwise, and upperKnown only when completed.
When to use this tool
Use Mobility Trial Unfinished Bound when you need to preserve completion and censoring distinctions in timed research data.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter elapsed, completed, completionLimit. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read durationLower, durationUpper, upperKnown. Inspect upperKnown before interpreting the associated values.
Require nonnegative elapsed and completionLimit at least elapsed. Return elapsed as durationLower, elapsed as durationUpper when completed or supplied completionLimit otherwise, and upperKnown only when completed.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| elapsed | Elapsed | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| completed | Completed | Required. Boolean. |
| completionLimit | Completion Limit | Required. Finite number. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| durationLower | Duration Lower | Required. Finite number. |
| durationUpper | Completion-limit placeholder when unfinished; not a known actual upper bound. | Required. Finite number. |
| upperKnown | Whether an actual completion upper bound is available; false for unfinished observations. | Required. Boolean. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- For an unfinished trial the numeric durationUpper is a supplied limit, not a known completion bound; inspect upperKnown and do not infer completion, physical ability, or a clinical score.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use a censoring-aware statistical method for incomplete observations. Keep event completion, observation limit, and measured duration separate rather than replacing every unfinished result with an exact completion time.
