Description
Divide solid volume by one minus porosity for bulk volume, multiply solid volume by density for mass, and return pore volume.
Sediment and soil calculations distinguish mass basis, solid density, bulk volume, and grain-size conventions. Changing moisture or grain-size scale changes the denominator or coordinate, not the physical sample itself.
Divide solid volume by one minus porosity for bulk volume, multiply solid volume by density for mass, and return pore volume.
When to use this tool
Use Sediment Transport Porosity Volume Factor when you need an explicit sediment or material-basis conversion.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter solidVolume, porosity, sedimentDensity. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read bulkVolume, solidMass, poreVolume. Use the output convention below.
Require nonnegative solidVolume, porosity in [0, 1), and positive sedimentDensity. Divide solid volume by one minus porosity for bulk volume, multiply solid volume by density for mass, and return pore volume.1

| sedimentDensity | Positive density of solid grains, not dry bulk density. | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |

| bulkVolume | Bulk Volume | Required. Finite number. |
| solidMass | Solid Mass | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Density is grain/solid mass per solid volume rather than bulk density; units must be coherent and porosity is supplied without sampling or compaction analysis.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use a traceable laboratory and sampling method for the required material property. Align wet/dry basis, solid versus bulk density, grain-size scale, and interval definitions before comparing samples.
