Geographic Height Reference Label Tool

Label a geographic height with its explicitly supplied height type and named datum; no datum transformation is performed.

Description

Append the supplied height in meters, reference type, and datum to a label.

A height or map reference label identifies the coordinate convention attached to a value. Changing the label does not transform the coordinates or convert between vertical datums.

Append the supplied height in meters, reference type, and datum to a label.

When to use this tool

Use Geographic Height Reference Label when you need to preserve or format a supplied geographic reference label.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter heightMeters, reference, datumName. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read label. Use the output convention below.

Require reference ellipsoidal, orthometric, or normal and nonblank datumName. Append the supplied height in meters, reference type, and datum to a label.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This labels rather than converts height; the datum is unverified and geoid/quasigeoid corrections or vertical transformations are not calculated.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use authoritative reference-system definitions and an appropriate coordinate transformation for actual datum conversion.
