Specific Gravity Hydrostatic
Correct separate air/immersed suspension tares before hydrostatic density and SG relative to declared water reference, retaining negative apparent immersed readings for floating materials; neglects air buoyancy, pores and bubbles and does not identify a gemstone.
Description
Hydrostatic density uses buoyant mass loss in a liquid of known density.
Hydrostatic density uses buoyant mass loss in a liquid of known density. Separate suspension tares are needed for air and immersed readings.1
Correct separate air/immersed suspension tares before hydrostatic density and SG relative to declared water reference, retaining negative apparent immersed readings for floating materials; neglects air buoyancy, pores and bubbles and does not identify a gemstone.
When to use Specific Gravity Hydrostatic
Use this tool to correct separate air/immersed suspension tares before hydrostatic density and SG relative to declared water reference, retaining negative apparent immersed readings for floating materials; neglects air buoyancy, pores and bubbles and does not identify a gemstone.
Prepare the gemstone measurements, spectra or comparison data and any supplied calibration parameters. Check units, reference conditions and record alignment.
How to use Specific Gravity Hydrostatic and understand its results
- Prepare the gemstone measurements, spectra or comparison data and any supplied calibration parameters. Check units, reference conditions and record alignment.
- Enter airReadingGrams, immersedReadingGrams, airSuspensionTareGrams, immersedSuspensionTareGrams, immersionLiquidDensityGramsPerCm3, referenceWaterDensityGramsPerCm3 using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read correctedAirMassGrams, correctedApparentImmersedMassGrams, hydrostaticSpecificGravity, estimatedDensityGramsPerCm3. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| airReadingGrams | Air reading grams | number | Required |
| immersedReadingGrams | Immersed reading grams | number | Required |
| airSuspensionTareGrams | Air suspension tare grams | number | Required |
| immersedSuspensionTareGrams | Immersed suspension tare grams | number | Required |
| immersionLiquidDensityGramsPerCm3 | Immersion liquid density grams per cm3 | number | Required |
| referenceWaterDensityGramsPerCm3 | Reference water density grams per cm3 | number | Required |
Enter readings and separate tares in grams and positive immersion/reference-water densities in g/cm³. Require corrected air mass and buoyant loss positive; allow negative apparent immersed mass for floating specimens. Return corrected readings, density and specific gravity relative to the supplied water reference.
density=corrected air mass/(corrected air−corrected immersed mass) × immersion-liquid density Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |

| correctedApparentImmersedMassGrams | Corrected apparent immersed mass grams | number |
| hydrostaticSpecificGravity | Hydrostatic specific gravity | number |
| estimatedDensityGramsPerCm3 | Estimated density grams per cm3 | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Air buoyancy, connected pores and bubbles are neglected. Density alone does not identify a gemstone.
Numeric inputs and returned numeric values must be finite; an unrepresentable returned value produces an error. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Heavy Liquid SG Estimate: Bracket specimen density from caller calibrated liquid sink/neutral/float observations, preserving unresolved intervals rather than naming a material; no heavy-liquid preparation, handling or care guidance. For a complementary task, use Amber Buoyancy Quick Test: Compare binary float/sink bracket to caller candidate density interval, without neutral-density readings; compatibility alone cannot identify amber, exclude resin/imitation or validate a preparation/handling method.
