Data-Center Power Forecast

Forecast data-center power demand against supplied grid capacity.

Description

Data-center energy forecasting compounds annual energy demand over integer years.

Data-center energy forecasting compounds annual energy demand over integer years. Annual TWh is an energy basis, distinct from instantaneous power capacity.1

Forecast data-center power demand against supplied grid capacity.

When to use Data-Center Power Forecast

Use this tool to forecast data-center power demand against supplied grid capacity.

Prepare the recorded observations, ratings, assumptions or expected/observed lists requested. Choose thresholds and definitions appropriate to the planning question.

How to use Data-Center Power Forecast and understand its results

  1. Prepare the recorded observations, ratings, assumptions or expected/observed lists requested. Choose thresholds and definitions appropriate to the planning question.
  2. Enter currentAnnualEnergyTwh, annualGrowthPercent, forecastYears, gridCapacityTwh using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read forecastEnergyTwh, capacityMarginTwh, capacityUtilizationPercent, withinCapacity. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
currentAnnualEnergyTwhCurrent annual energy demand (TWh)number; minimum: 0Required
annualGrowthPercentAnnual demand growth (%)numberRequired
forecastYearsForecast horizon (years)integer; minimum: 0Required
gridCapacityTwhAvailable annual grid capacity (TWh)number; minimum: 0Required

Enter nonnegative current energy/years, growth strictly above −100% and positive annual capacity TWh. Return forecast, signed capacity margin, utilization and inclusive gate.

forecast=currentTWh(1+growth/100)^years; utilization%=100forecast/capacity

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No hourly grid capacity, load shape, efficiency gains or measured demand is forecast independently.

Numeric inputs, where present, must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Finite Resource Growth Horizon: Estimate a finite-stock depletion horizon under constant geometric consumption growth. For a complementary task, use State of the Future Index: Calculate a caller-defined weighted percent-change index from aligned indicators.
