Description
Compare left and right.
An interval's endpoints and bracket style encode inclusion rules. A range label or comparison symbol can describe supplied numbers without computing its members, proving an inequality or establishing a statistical confidence interval.
Compare left and right.
When to use this tool
Use Numeric Inequality Direction Display when you need the specified interval or relation display.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter left, right, inclusive. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read text, relation. Use the output convention below.
Compare left and right. Use less/greater symbols, their inclusive forms when requested, or equals when numerically equal, and return both text and relation.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| left | Left | Required. Finite number. |
| right | Right | Required. Finite number. |
| inclusive | Inclusive | Required. Boolean. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| text | Literal formatted output under the stated grammar and display convention. | Required. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. |
| relation | Relation | Required. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. |
{
"input": {
"left": 2,
"right": 5,
"inclusive": false
},
"output": {
"text": "2 < 5",
"relation": "<"
}
} Limitations and assumptions
- The relation is chosen from the supplied values rather than parsing a requested inequality. Inclusive changes the glyph, not the comparison result.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use a set or interval calculation for membership and emptiness beyond the supported convention. Verify units, unbounded endpoints and integer-versus-real interpretation before using a label as a mathematical specification.
