Formatting: Decimal Uncertainty Last Place Label Tool

Format absolute uncertainty in parentheses at the last explicitly retained decimal place; accepts fixed decimal literals only, not significant-figure inference.

Description

Append parentheses and return numeric uncertaintyDigits times 10 to the negative fractional-place count.

Measurement uncertainty notation needs a declared numerical scale, unit and interpretation. Parenthesized digits can refer to the last written places, while a coverage-factor suffix is only a label unless an uncertainty calculation supports it.

Append parentheses and return numeric uncertaintyDigits times 10 to the negative fractional-place count.

When to use this tool

Use Formatting: Decimal Uncertainty Last Place Label when you need the specified uncertainty-text layout or last-place conversion.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter valueLiteral, uncertaintyDigits. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read result. Expand result to inspect the returned fields.

Require signed decimal valueLiteral with 1-12 digits in each present part and 1-6 uncertainty digits. Append parentheses and return numeric uncertaintyDigits times 10 to the negative fractional-place count.1

The parenthesis convention scales uncertainty digits to the final written place. The formatter does not estimate uncertainty or coverage.2

Limitations and assumptions

  • The digits express absolute uncertainty in the last written place, in the value's unit. They are not a measured confidence level, and value spelling is preserved without rounding.
  • Outputs are nested inside result. Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use an appropriate uncertainty analysis and reporting convention for real measurements. Verify units, decimal alignment, uncertainty type and coverage meaning separately from formatting.
