Description
Return direct normalized position/distance, or their complements when reverseDirection.
A pattern's seam and closure dimensions combine finished lengths with allowances, overlaps and offsets. A local length budget describes an ideal construction; fabric thickness, movement and fitting can change the practical result.
Return direct normalized position/distance, or their complements when reverseDirection.
When to use this tool
Use Pattern Notch Relative Position when you need a local pattern, seam or closure dimension check.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter notchDistance, segmentLength, reverseDirection. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read fraction, orientedDistance. Use the output convention below.
Require positive segmentLength and notchDistance within it. Return direct normalized position/distance, or their complements when reverseDirection.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| notchDistance | Notch Distance | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| segmentLength | Segment Length | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| reverseDirection | Reverse Direction | Required. Boolean. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| fraction | Dimensionless fraction, not percent: 0.1 represents 10%. | Required. Finite number. |
| orientedDistance | Oriented Distance | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- The model is one measured seam segment. It does not inspect a curved seam, pattern notches or corresponding-piece fit.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Check the complete pattern and make an appropriate sample in the intended material. Review seam construction, allowances, shrinkage and fitting rather than treating one margin as complete garment validation.
