Description
Subtract (pieces-1)×stripWidth from total piece lengths.
A pattern's seam and closure dimensions combine finished lengths with allowances, overlaps and offsets. A local length budget describes an ideal construction; fabric thickness, movement and fitting can change the practical result.
Subtract (pieces-1)×stripWidth from total piece lengths.
When to use this tool
Use Bias Binding Diagonal Seam Loss when you need a local pattern, seam or closure dimension check.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter pieces, pieceLength, stripWidth. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read grossLength, seamLoss, netLength. Use the output convention below.
Require positive integer pieces and pieceLength at least positive stripWidth. Subtract (pieces-1)×stripWidth from total piece lengths.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| pieces | Pieces | Required. Safe integer; minimum 1. |
| pieceLength | Piece Length | Required. Finite number. |
| stripWidth | Strip Width | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| grossLength | Gross Length | Required. Finite number. |
| seamLoss | Seam Loss | Required. Finite number. |
| netLength | Net Length | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- This assumes one strip-width loss per diagonal join. Additional seam margins, end finishing, grain layout and actual cutting feasibility are not established.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Check the complete pattern and make an appropriate sample in the intended material. Review seam construction, allowances, shrinkage and fitting rather than treating one margin as complete garment validation.
