Phylogeny Path Branch Sum Tool

Sum an explicitly supplied tree path’s branch lengths without inferring topology.

Loading tool…

Description

Require nonnegative branch lengths and sum them.

Evolutionary time and branch length are linked through a supplied clock or calibration. A unit conversion, path sum or residual assumes the underlying tree and rate model rather than recovering them from biological data.

Require nonnegative branch lengths and sum them.

When to use this tool

Use Phylogeny Path Branch Sum when you need one branch-time, path or calibration term.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter branchLengths. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read pathLength. Use the output convention below.

Limitations and assumptions

  • The list is assumed to be the intended path. No tree topology, connectivity, duplicated branches, clock model or common length unit is independently verified.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use a complete phylogenetic or dating method with the relevant sequence, fossil and rate evidence. Verify topology, branch units, calibration assumptions and uncertainty separately.
