Description
Sum included and omitted branch lengths separately.
Evolutionary time and branch length are linked through a supplied clock or calibration. A unit conversion, path sum or residual assumes the underlying tree and rate model rather than recovering them from biological data.
Sum included and omitted branch lengths separately.
When to use this tool
Use Branch Length Tip Distance when you need one branch-time, path or calibration term.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter branchLengths, includedPath. Keep parallel arrays aligned. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read pathDistance, omittedLength. Use the output convention below.
Require aligned nonnegative branch lengths and path flags. Sum included and omitted branch lengths separately.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| branchLengths | Branch Lengths | Required. Array of finite number; maximum items 256. |
| includedPath | Included Path | Required. Array of boolean; maximum items 256. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| pathDistance | Path Distance | Required. Finite number. |
| omittedLength | Omitted Length | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Flags define the intended path; actual tree topology and connectivity are not checked. Units must be common and repeated records are counted separately.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use a complete phylogenetic or dating method with the relevant sequence, fossil and rate evidence. Verify topology, branch units, calibration assumptions and uncertainty separately.
