Historic Jurisdiction Interval Gap Tool

Compare supplied public jurisdiction endpoints on one coordinate axis; no boundary history is inferred.

Loading tool…

Description

Return secondStart-minus-firstEnd and overlap when that difference is negative.

Historical records can use uncertain dates, different calendars and incomplete jurisdiction periods. Signed endpoint differences describe supplied coordinates; they do not perform a historical-calendar conversion or establish the actual period's authority.

Return secondStart-minus-firstEnd and overlap when that difference is negative.

When to use this tool

Use Historic Jurisdiction Interval Gap when you need a supplied historical-date or interval comparison.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter firstEnd, secondStart. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read gap, overlap. Inspect overlap before interpreting the associated values.

Return secondStart-minus-firstEnd and overlap when that difference is negative.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
firstEndFirst EndRequired. Finite number.
secondStartSecond StartRequired. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Only these two endpoints are compared: no complete period bounds or endpoint-inclusion convention is validated, and equality is not overlap under this rule.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Resolve the source calendar, date precision and jurisdictional context before comparison. Use a dedicated historical chronology method when calendar conversion or legal interpretation is needed.
