Musical Pulse Timing Residual

Compare one supplied musical onset with an explicit pulse reference on the same clock.

Description

Calculate a musical pulse's signed timing residual.

Musical field records distinguish performer/community attribution, transcription and naming sources, cyclic beat coordinates and recorded permission. A public-access label is different from a reuse license, and a numerical timing residual is different from performance interpretation. Cultural context and actual consent remain tied to original sources.

Calculate a musical pulse's signed timing residual.

When to use this tool

Use Musical Pulse Timing Residual when checking the stated public-record, timing, attribution or permission convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter observedSeconds, referenceSeconds. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read residualSeconds. Use the output convention below.

Return observedSeconds-referenceSeconds as signed residualSeconds.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
observedSecondsObserved SecondsRequired. Finite number.
referenceSecondsReference SecondsRequired. Finite number.

residualSecondsResidual SecondsRequired. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Times are supplied rather than extracted from audio; no pulse detection, alignment, expression or performance-quality inference is made.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use original recordings and community/source conventions, with appropriate verified consent and rights review for actual interpretation, reproduction or sharing.
