Monitoring Window Coverage Share Tool

Use a supplied total overlap correction for measured monitoring coverage, not a guessed interval union.

Description

Return uniqueCovered as that difference and coverage = uniqueCovered/windowDuration.

Environmental monitoring coverage depends on what counts in the denominator. Time, effort, area, sampled volume and exposure weights describe different support measures; excluding missing or ineligible portions changes the question answered by a fraction.

Return uniqueCovered as that difference and coverage = uniqueCovered/windowDuration.

When to use this tool

Use Monitoring Window Coverage Share when checking a monitoring or sampling share with an explicit inclusion and overlap convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter windowDuration, coveredDurations, suppliedOverlap. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read uniqueCovered, coverage. Use the output convention below.

Require positive windowDuration, nonnegative coveredDurations and suppliedOverlap between zero and their sum. Require sum(coveredDurations)-suppliedOverlap <= windowDuration. Return uniqueCovered as that difference and coverage = uniqueCovered/windowDuration.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Overlap is supplied as a total duplicate-duration deduction, not computed from timestamps. Multiple overlaps must be counted so that the deduction represents overcounting correctly; passing bounds does not prove temporal coverage is correct.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review source intervals and sampling design, and compute overlaps from actual records when an aggregate deduction cannot be justified.
