Monitoring Effort Covered Fraction Tool

Calculate monitoring effort covered fraction from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Loading tool…

Description

Return covered = scheduled-missing-excluded+overlap and fraction = covered/scheduled.

Environmental monitoring coverage depends on what counts in the denominator. Time, effort, area, sampled volume and exposure weights describe different support measures; excluding missing or ineligible portions changes the question answered by a fraction.

Return covered = scheduled-missing-excluded+overlap and fraction = covered/scheduled.

When to use this tool

Use Monitoring Effort Covered Fraction when checking a monitoring or sampling share with an explicit inclusion and overlap convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter scheduled, missing, excluded, overlap. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read covered, fraction. Use the output convention below.

Require positive scheduled and nonnegative missing, excluded and overlap. Require overlap <= min(missing, excluded) and missing+excluded-overlap <= scheduled. Return covered = scheduled-missing-excluded+overlap and fraction = covered/scheduled.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The addition restores the portion subtracted twice as both missing and excluded. All quantities use one effort or time basis; this local balance does not verify source logs or establish unbiased monitoring.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review source intervals and sampling design, and compute overlaps from actual records when an aggregate deduction cannot be justified.
