Environmental Limit Qualifier Sign Tool

Compare an exact or strictly censored observation with an explicit limit, retaining indeterminate relations.

Loading tool…

Description

Accept qualifier only as exact, less-than or greater-than.

A threshold comparison needs compatible units, a direction and boundary rules. A caller-provided limit or reporting bound is an input to the calculation; it does not establish which scientific, analytical or legal rule applies.

Accept qualifier only as exact, less-than or greater-than.

When to use this tool

Use Environmental Limit Qualifier Sign when comparing a supplied value, bound or elapsed time with an explicit reference.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter value, limit, qualifier. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read pointDifference, relation. Use the output convention below.

Accept qualifier only as exact, less-than or greater-than. Return pointDifference = value-limit. With exact, compare the numbers directly; with less-than, return below only when value <= limit, otherwise indeterminate; with greater-than, return above only when value >= limit, otherwise indeterminate.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • For a qualified observation, value is the strict bound on the unknown observation, not necessarily its measured point. The numeric pointDifference always compares the supplied bounds and must not replace the qualified relation; no compliance decision is made.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Consult the applicable method or authoritative policy to establish the reference, especially for censored measurements and compliance decisions.
