Insect Survey Temperature Reference Gap Tool

Calculate insect survey temperature reference gap from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

differenceC = observedC-referenceC; withinTolerance = abs(differenceC) <= toleranceC.

Insect morphology measurements depend on landmark definitions, image scale and specimen condition. A length ratio can be dimensionless while a calibrated coordinate has physical units; neither arithmetic operation validates anatomical correspondence or preservation assumptions.

differenceC = observedC-referenceC; withinTolerance = abs(differenceC) <= toleranceC.

When to use this tool

Use Insect Survey Temperature Reference Gap when checking a supplied morphological measurement, calibration or length ratio.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter observedC, referenceC, toleranceC. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read differenceC, withinTolerance. Inspect withinTolerance before interpreting the associated values.

Require observedC and referenceC >= -273.15 and nonnegative toleranceC. differenceC = observedC-referenceC; withinTolerance = abs(differenceC) <= toleranceC.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Tolerance is an inclusive supplied Celsius difference, not a species-specific sampling or welfare threshold. The comparison does not validate instruments or make temperatures biologically equivalent.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified imaging calibration and appropriate specimen methods for anatomical interpretation, and propagate uncertainty when measurement precision matters.
