Insect Measurement Preservation Base Tool

Invert an explicitly supplied preservation scale factor; no species/material correction is guessed.

Description

conditionalFreshLength = preservedLength/suppliedRetentionFactor; referenceGap = conditionalFreshLength-freshReference.

Insect morphology measurements depend on landmark definitions, image scale and specimen condition. A length ratio can be dimensionless while a calibrated coordinate has physical units; neither arithmetic operation validates anatomical correspondence or preservation assumptions.

conditionalFreshLength = preservedLength/suppliedRetentionFactor; referenceGap = conditionalFreshLength-freshReference.

When to use this tool

Use Insect Measurement Preservation Base when checking a supplied morphological measurement, calibration or length ratio.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter preservedLength, suppliedRetentionFactor, freshReference. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read conditionalFreshLength, referenceGap. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative preservedLength and freshReference and positive suppliedRetentionFactor. conditionalFreshLength = preservedLength/suppliedRetentionFactor; referenceGap = conditionalFreshLength-freshReference.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The retention factor is preserved length per fresh length and is not estimated here. It may exceed one; preservation effects, species variation and uncertainty remain caller assumptions.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified imaging calibration and appropriate specimen methods for anatomical interpretation, and propagate uncertainty when measurement precision matters.
