Apex Locator Reference Mark Gap

Compare explicit apex-locator reference-mark positions without estimating anatomical apex position or recommending instrumentation.

Description

Measure an apex-locator mark's signed difference from a reference mark.

Endodontic records use explicit tooth/canal identifiers, length references and device-mark conventions. A numeric offset changes a recorded length without determining anatomical endpoints. A source-qualified canal label preserves supplied wording rather than confirming identification or a clinically appropriate working length.

Measure an apex-locator mark's signed difference from a reference mark.

When to use this tool

Use Apex Locator Reference Mark Gap when you already have observedMarkPosition, referenceMarkPosition and need to measure an apex-locator mark's signed difference from a reference mark.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter observedMarkPosition, referenceMarkPosition. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read signedGap. Use the output convention below.

Return observedMarkPosition-referenceMarkPosition without absolute value or clamping.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
observedMarkPositionObserved Mark PositionRequired. Finite number.
referenceMarkPositionReference Mark PositionRequired. Finite number.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape

Limitations and assumptions

  • Positions must share one scale and reference. This does not calibrate an apex locator, determine anatomy or select a clinical working length.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review the original clinical record, verified measurement references and complete assessment when a treatment question arises. Keep supplied offset arithmetic and label formatting separate from actual anatomy, instrument position, device interpretation and clinical decisions.
