Electricity: Transformer Turns Polarity Sign Tool

Apply an ideal transformer turns ratio with an explicit common/opposed dotted voltage-reference orientation; not a winding safety or saturation model.

Description

secondaryVoltage = primaryVoltage*secondaryTurns/primaryTurns, with positive sign when sameDottedReference and negative sign otherwise.

Magnetic coupling uses explicit winding, current and voltage references. Turns-square reflection and mutual-energy signs are ideal model conventions; they do not establish actual coupling, saturation or a safe winding connection.

secondaryVoltage = primaryVoltage*secondaryTurns/primaryTurns, with positive sign when sameDottedReference and negative sign otherwise.

When to use this tool

Use Electricity: Transformer Turns Polarity Sign when checking one supplied turns-ratio, dot-reference or mutual-coupling term.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter primaryVoltage, secondaryTurns, primaryTurns, sameDottedReference. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read result. Expand result to inspect the returned fields.

Require whole primaryTurns and secondaryTurns in [1,1000000]. secondaryVoltage = primaryVoltage*secondaryTurns/primaryTurns, with positive sign when sameDottedReference and negative sign otherwise.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This is an ideal turns ratio with an explicit dot-reference sign. It does not model power loading, winding losses, insulation limits or safe transformer connection.
  • Outputs are nested inside result. Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the full coupled circuit and component data for physical realizability, losses, transients and operating constraints.
