Leaflitter Decay Single Interval Factor Tool

Calculate a supplied litter dry-mass remaining fraction and apparent single-interval exponential decay constant, preserving negative values for mass gain.

Description

Calculate one interval's mass fraction and apparent exponential-decay constant.

Ecological records need explicit sampling units, detection states, effort denominators, interval geometry and trait/abundance bases. Nondetection differs from absence, and shared sampling-unit labels do not alone diagnose pseudoreplication. A one-axis overlap or single weighted contribution is only a limited component of a broader ecological analysis.

Calculate one interval's mass fraction and apparent exponential-decay constant.

When to use this tool

Use Leaflitter Decay Single Interval Factor when you already have initialDryMass, finalDryMass, elapsedTime and need to calculate one interval's mass fraction and apparent exponential-decay constant.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter initialDryMass, finalDryMass, elapsedTime. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read remainingFraction, apparentDecayConstant. Use the output convention below.

Require positive finite initial/final dry masses and elapsed time; fraction=final/initial, apparentConstant=(ln(initial)-ln(final))/time.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
initialDryMassInitial Dry MassRequired. Finite number; strictly above 0.
finalDryMassFinal Dry MassRequired. Finite number; strictly above 0.
elapsedTimeElapsed TimeRequired. Finite number; strictly above 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
remainingFractionFinal/initial dry mass; an extreme positive ratio may underflow to zero even while the log-derived constant stays finite.Required. Finite number.
apparentDecayConstant(ln(initialDryMass)-ln(finalDryMass))/elapsedTime in inverse time; negative for apparent mass gain.Required. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Mass gain is accepted and gives a negative apparent constant. Matching dry-mass bases and an interval model are assumed; no mechanism, multi-time fit or true decay rate is established. Extreme positive mass ratios may underflow to zero while the log-derived constant remains finite.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review original survey records, sampling design, specimens and calibration definitions for an ecological conclusion. Use complete detection, population, community or process models as appropriate; local count rates and source labels do not infer unobserved states or ecological mechanisms.
