Stratigraphic Top Base Order Check

Compare supplied stratigraphic top and base under an explicit depth-axis convention.

Description

Check stratigraphic endpoint order under a supplied vertical sign convention.

Earth-science records distinguish depth signs, vertical datums, before-present ages, calibration factors and specimen definitions. Apparent porosity can be negative for inconsistent density inputs, and core recovery may exceed the drilled interval. Local labels and supplied transformations do not establish geological interpretation, physical validity or actual observation quality.

Check stratigraphic endpoint order under a supplied vertical sign convention.

When to use this tool

Use Stratigraphic Top Base Order Check when you already have topDepth, baseDepth, depthIncreasesDownward and need to check stratigraphic endpoint order under a supplied vertical sign convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter topDepth, baseDepth, depthIncreasesDownward. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read ordered, signedThickness. Inspect ordered before interpreting the associated values.

When depth increases downward require base>=top for ordered=true, otherwise top>=base; signedThickness=(base-top) with the corresponding sign.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input

depthIncreasesDownwardDepth Increases DownwardRequired. Boolean.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape

Limitations and assumptions

  • Incorrect order returns false and negative thickness rather than rejecting input. Equality is ordered with zero thickness; true stratigraphic thickness and structure are not inferred.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified survey, sample, sensor and timescale records with consistent units and reference frames. Apply the complete geological, hydrological or physical model when local density ratios, depth spans or calibration terms cannot establish the required interpretation.
