Sediment Compaction Thickness Factor Tool

One-dimensional constant-solid-volume compaction at fixed plan area, excluding cementation and grain loss.

Description

thicknessFactor = (1-initialPorosity)/(1-finalPorosity); finalThickness = initialThickness*factor.

Rock and sediment material properties depend on pore, fluid, solid and bulk-volume bases. A porosity or saturation ratio assumes compatible masses, densities and measurement conditions; it does not validate those assumptions.

thicknessFactor = (1-initialPorosity)/(1-finalPorosity); finalThickness = initialThickness*factor.

When to use this tool

Use Sediment Compaction Thickness Factor when checking a supplied material-volume or composition balance.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter initialThickness, initialPorosity, finalPorosity. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read thicknessFactor, finalThickness. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative initialThickness and porosities in [0,1). thicknessFactor = (1-initialPorosity)/(1-finalPorosity); finalThickness = initialThickness*factor.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This assumes constant solid volume and cross-sectional area. No compaction law, grain crushing, fluid flow or sediment history is inferred; increased porosity can increase thickness.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use appropriate specimen methods and complete material models for physical interpretation, uncertainty and practical engineering use.
