Rock Void Filled Mass Base Tool

Ideal fully filled connected-void mass balance with supplied fluid density, not total porosity from incomplete saturation.

Loading tool…

Description

voidVolume = (filledMass-dryMass)/fluidDensity; voidFraction = voidVolume/bulkVolume.

Rock and sediment material properties depend on pore, fluid, solid and bulk-volume bases. A porosity or saturation ratio assumes compatible masses, densities and measurement conditions; it does not validate those assumptions.

voidVolume = (filledMass-dryMass)/fluidDensity; voidFraction = voidVolume/bulkVolume.

When to use this tool

Use Rock Void Filled Mass Base when checking a supplied material-volume or composition balance.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter dryMass, filledMass, fluidDensity, bulkVolume. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read voidVolume, voidFraction. Use the output convention below.

Require positive fluidDensity and bulkVolume and filledMass >= dryMass >= 0, with inferred void volume <= bulkVolume. voidVolume = (filledMass-dryMass)/fluidDensity; voidFraction = voidVolume/bulkVolume.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use compatible mass, density and volume units. The result assumes the mass increment fills the represented accessible voids without reaction; incomplete saturation and closed pores are not corrected.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use appropriate specimen methods and complete material models for physical interpretation, uncertainty and practical engineering use.
