Mineral Volume Mass Fraction Crosswalk Tool

Two-mineral additive-volume density and mass-fraction conversion, excluding pore space.

Description

mixtureDensity is the volume-weighted density sum; firstMassFraction = firstVolumeFraction*firstDensity/mixtureDensity.

Rock and sediment material properties depend on pore, fluid, solid and bulk-volume bases. A porosity or saturation ratio assumes compatible masses, densities and measurement conditions; it does not validate those assumptions.

mixtureDensity is the volume-weighted density sum; firstMassFraction = firstVolumeFraction*firstDensity/mixtureDensity.

When to use this tool

Use Mineral Volume Mass Fraction Crosswalk when checking a supplied material-volume or composition balance.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter firstVolumeFraction, firstDensity, secondDensity. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read mixtureDensity, firstMassFraction. Use the output convention below.

Require firstVolumeFraction in [0,1] and positive firstDensity and secondDensity. mixtureDensity is the volume-weighted density sum; firstMassFraction = firstVolumeFraction*firstDensity/mixtureDensity.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use common density units. This assumes two components and additive volumes without porosity or volume change; mass and volume fractions are not interchangeable.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use appropriate specimen methods and complete material models for physical interpretation, uncertainty and practical engineering use.
