Description
Compare two supplied ages measured before a common present.
Earth-science records distinguish depth signs, vertical datums, before-present ages, calibration factors and specimen definitions. Apparent porosity can be negative for inconsistent density inputs, and core recovery may exceed the drilled interval. Local labels and supplied transformations do not establish geological interpretation, physical validity or actual observation quality.
Compare two supplied ages measured before a common present.
When to use this tool
Use Geologic Age Older Younger Pair when you already have firstAgeBeforePresent, secondAgeBeforePresent and need to compare two supplied ages measured before a common present.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter firstAgeBeforePresent, secondAgeBeforePresent. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read firstOlder, equalAge, firstMinusSecond. Inspect firstOlder, equalAge before interpreting the associated values.
Require both ages>=0; firstOlder=first>second, equalAge=first===second, difference=first-second.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| firstAgeBeforePresent | First Age Before Present | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| secondAgeBeforePresent | Second Age Before Present | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| firstOlder | True for larger firstAgeBeforePresent, assuming a common present epoch and time unit. | Required. Boolean. |
| equalAge | Equal Age | Required. Boolean. |
| firstMinusSecond | First Minus Second | Required. Finite number. |

"input": {
"firstAgeBeforePresent": 120,
"secondAgeBeforePresent": 80
},
"output": {
"firstOlder": true,
"equalAge": false,
"firstMinusSecond": 40

} Limitations and assumptions
- Larger before-present ages are older under the supplied convention. No dating, uncertainty, calibration curve, timescale version or present epoch is selected.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use verified survey, sample, sensor and timescale records with consistent units and reference frames. Apply the complete geological, hydrological or physical model when local density ratios, depth spans or calibration terms cannot establish the required interpretation.
