Description
poreVolume = bulkVolume*porosity; waterVolume = waterMass/waterDensity; saturation = waterVolume/poreVolume.
Rock and sediment material properties depend on pore, fluid, solid and bulk-volume bases. A porosity or saturation ratio assumes compatible masses, densities and measurement conditions; it does not validate those assumptions.
poreVolume = bulkVolume*porosity; waterVolume = waterMass/waterDensity; saturation = waterVolume/poreVolume.
When to use this tool
Use Earth Sample Water Saturation Pore Volume Term when checking a supplied material-volume or composition balance.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter bulkVolume, porosity, waterMass, waterDensity. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read poreVolume, waterVolume, saturation. Use the output convention below.
Require positive bulkVolume and waterDensity, porosity in (0,1] and nonnegative waterMass. poreVolume = bulkVolume*porosity; waterVolume = waterMass/waterDensity; saturation = waterVolume/poreVolume.1

} Limitations and assumptions
- Use coherent volume and mass/density units. Saturation can exceed one because water volume is not capped; no drainage state, pore connectivity or material consistency is verified.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
