Beddip Reference Plane Flag Tool

Complement an acute bed-dip angle measured from vertical; orientation and geological interpretation remain caller supplied.

Description

angleFromHorizontal = 90-angleDegrees when referenceIsVertical, otherwise preserve angleDegrees.

Geological orientations and component projections require explicit axis, angle and sign conventions. A straight segment or planar-set correction is a geometric model, not an independently measured structure or hazard assessment.

angleFromHorizontal = 90-angleDegrees when referenceIsVertical, otherwise preserve angleDegrees.

When to use this tool

Use Beddip Reference Plane Flag when checking one supplied geological orientation or displacement projection.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter angleDegrees, referenceIsVertical. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read angleFromHorizontal. Use the output convention below.

Require angleDegrees in [0,90]. angleFromHorizontal = 90-angleDegrees when referenceIsVertical, otherwise preserve angleDegrees.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
angleDegreesAngle DegreesRequired. Finite number; minimum 0; maximum 90.
referenceIsVerticalReference Is VerticalRequired. Boolean.

Limitations and assumptions

  • This converts complementary acute-angle conventions only. It does not select a dip direction, strike, right-hand rule or reference plane from observations.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified observations, reference directions and full geometry before interpreting real structures or practical stability.
