Bedding Dip Strike Orthogonality Check Tool

Right-hand strike-to-dip-direction quarter-turn residual in radians; no bedding orientation is measured or selected.

Description

signedRightHandResidual wraps dipDirection-strike-pi/2 with atan2(sin,cos); satisfiesRightHandRule tests its absolute value <= tolerance.

Geological orientations and component projections require explicit axis, angle and sign conventions. A straight segment or planar-set correction is a geometric model, not an independently measured structure or hazard assessment.

signedRightHandResidual wraps dipDirection-strike-pi/2 with atan2(sin,cos); satisfiesRightHandRule tests its absolute value <= tolerance.

When to use this tool

Use Bedding Dip Strike Orthogonality Check when checking one supplied geological orientation or displacement projection.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter strikeRadians, dipDirectionRadians, toleranceRadians. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read signedRightHandResidual, satisfiesRightHandRule. Inspect satisfiesRightHandRule before interpreting the associated values.

Require toleranceRadians in [0,pi]. signedRightHandResidual wraps dipDirection-strike-pi/2 with atan2(sin,cos); satisfiesRightHandRule tests its absolute value <= tolerance.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • All angles use radians and a common bearing convention. The check tests a supplied right-hand relation, not measured bedding orientation, magnetic correction or geological stability.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified observations, reference directions and full geometry before interpreting real structures or practical stability.
