Description
Return distance to a solid capsule from a supplied segment distance.
Radial geometry distinguishes a solid region from its boundary. A point inside a ball has zero distance to the solid, while its signed boundary gap is negative and its absolute boundary distance can be positive.
Return distance to a solid capsule from a supplied segment distance.
When to use this tool
Use Point To Capsule Radial Excess when checking a supplied radial boundary or solid-region convention.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter segmentDistance, radius. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read solidDistance, signedSurfaceGap. Use the output convention below.
Return distance to a solid capsule from a supplied segment distance. Require nonnegative segmentDistance and radius; signedSurfaceGap = segmentDistance-radius and solidDistance = max(0,signedSurfaceGap).1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| segmentDistance | Segment Distance | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| radius | Radius | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| solidDistance | Solid Distance | Required. Finite number. |
| signedSurfaceGap | Signed Surface Gap | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- The segment distance is supplied, not computed; negative signed gap means interior.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use full point and shape geometry when a radius or center distance has not already been established.
