Excel 1,048,576-Row Limit Check

Check a total row count, including headers, against the 1,048,576-row limit of modern Excel worksheets and report remaining capacity or excess rows.

Description

A worksheet's row capacity includes the header row.

A worksheet's row capacity includes the header row. Splitting a CSV export based only on data rows can still exceed the limit when a header is added to each output file.1, 2

Check a total row count, including headers, against the 1,048,576-row limit of modern Excel worksheets and report remaining capacity or excess rows.

When to use Excel 1,048,576-Row Limit Check

Use this tool to check a total row count, including headers, against the 1,048,576-row limit of modern Excel worksheets and report remaining capacity or excess rows.

Choose the original CSV text, decoded cell strings, byte values or counts requested by this tool. Use the stated delimiter, encoding, indexing and number/date convention.

How to use Excel 1,048,576-Row Limit Check and understand its results

  1. Choose the original CSV text, decoded cell strings, byte values or counts requested by this tool. Use the stated delimiter, encoding, indexing and number/date convention.
  2. Enter totalRows using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read fits, limit, remaining, excess. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
totalRowsTotal rowsinteger; minimum: 0; maximum: 9007199254740991Required

Enter the total number of worksheet rows, including any headers, as a nonnegative safe integer. The tool returns the fixed modern Excel limit, whether the count fits, the unused capacity and the number of excess rows. Equality passes; zero rows leaves the full capacity available.

fits = totalRows ≤ 1,048,576; remaining = max(0, limit − totalRows); excess = max(0, totalRows − limit)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

This does not inspect or split a CSV file, count physical newlines, or check older workbook limits. Quoted line breaks are not extra records. When using a data-row chunk calculator, allow separately for any repeated header rows.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Excel XFD 16,384-Column Limit Check: Check a worksheet column count against Excel’s XFD boundary of 16,384 columns, returning remaining capacity and a generalized A1 name for the last column. For a complementary task, use Chunk Size Rows-Per-File Split Calculator: Calculate file count and final-file data rows from a total data-row count and positive per-file capacity using exact integer division; header rows are excluded from both counts.
