Chunk Size Rows-Per-File Split Calculator
Calculate file count and final-file data rows from a total data-row count and positive per-file capacity using exact integer division; header rows are excluded from both counts.
Description
Splitting an export into fixed-capacity chunks requires ceiling division: a partially filled final file still counts as a file.
Splitting an export into fixed-capacity chunks requires ceiling division: a partially filled final file still counts as a file. Data-row capacity and any repeated header rows should be handled separately.1
Calculate file count and final-file data rows from a total data-row count and positive per-file capacity using exact integer division; header rows are excluded from both counts.
When to use Chunk Size Rows-Per-File Split Calculator
Use this tool to calculate file count and final-file data rows from a total data-row count and positive per-file capacity using exact integer division; header rows are excluded from both counts.
Choose the original CSV text, decoded cell strings, byte values or counts requested by this tool. Use the stated delimiter, encoding, indexing and number/date convention.
How to use Chunk Size Rows-Per-File Split Calculator and understand its results
- Choose the original CSV text, decoded cell strings, byte values or counts requested by this tool. Use the stated delimiter, encoding, indexing and number/date convention.
- Enter totalDataRows, maxDataRowsPerFile using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read fileCount, lastFileRows. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| totalDataRows | Total data rows | integer; minimum: 0; maximum: 9007199254740991 | Required |
| maxDataRowsPerFile | Max data rows per file | integer; minimum: 1; maximum: 9007199254740991 | Required |
Enter a nonnegative total data-row count and a positive maximum data rows per file, both safe integers. Exact integer division computes the number of files and the last file's data rows. Zero total returns both outputs as 0; an exact positive multiple produces a final file at full capacity rather than an empty extra file.
fileCount = ceil(totalDataRows / capacity); lastFileRows = total = 0 ? 0 : ((total − 1) mod capacity) + 1 Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| fileCount | File count | integer; minimum: 0; maximum: 9007199254740991 |
| lastFileRows | Last file rows | integer; minimum: 0; maximum: 9007199254740991 |

} Limitations and assumptions
It plans counts without reading, writing or splitting files. Headers are excluded from both inputs and outputs; subtract header rows from a worksheet's capacity before choosing the data-row capacity. It does not account for byte-size limits.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Excel 1,048,576-Row Limit Check: Check a total row count, including headers, against the 1,048,576-row limit of modern Excel worksheets and report remaining capacity or excess rows. For a complementary task, use Header Offset Record Index: Map a zero-based data record index to a zero-based CSV record index by adding one when a header exists; record indices do not count embedded physical lines.
