Critical Note Source Frame Depth Tool

Calculate critical note source frame depth from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Return a note's relative source-frame depth.

Scholarly annotation can preserve term senses, agent roles and source frames using explicit labels. Literal agreement, a recognized marker or an unambiguous record key organizes those assertions without establishing their meaning, truth or scholarly authority.

Return a note's relative source-frame depth.

When to use this tool

Use Critical Note Source Frame Depth when checking one explicit annotation, marker or source-identity convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter sourceDepth, noteDepth. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read relativeDepth, deeper. Inspect deeper before interpreting the associated values.

Return a note's relative source-frame depth. Require nonnegative whole sourceDepth/noteDepth; relativeDepth = noteDepth-sourceDepth, deeper tests noteDepth > sourceDepth.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Depth labels are supplied metadata, not a parsed quotation hierarchy or a measure of interpretive quality.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Inspect the source text and interpretive framework for substantive analysis; use source-aware annotation and bibliographic tools for complete records.
